Audience and Institution Practice Essay

I answered question 5: In relation to the media area you have studied, discuss the whys audience consumption has changed over time.

I believe the ways people consume media has exponentially changed over time. I think the ways of consuming media have advanced greatly in recent years due to advances in technology and society. There are also definitely negative effects of these advances.
To begin, just the way people view media nowadays has changed greatly. For example, in the 1950s, going to watch a movie was not as common as now. Most homes did not have a television and going to the movies was expensive. One reason for that is people in the 21st century have more expendable money, to be able to do leisurely activities, such as going to a movie. I think that helped the media industry grow, people being able to go and watch movies more often allowed for them to make more money. For example, in March of 1950 the top grossing movie was Cinderella, at only $52,403,594. On the other hand, the top grossing movie of 2019 is Avengers:Endgame which made 858,373,000 dollars. I believe this is a result of people having easier access to these movies and more income to go and watch the movies.
To add, another way viewing media has changed is through social advances. Socially we have many more allowances for what is acceptable to be on television and movies, and what is not. I believe the more candid and open film makers are, the more they open up to a new audience. For example, a controversial show at the time was All in the Family, which aired in January 1980, and grossed 8 million dollars in today's money. Yet a politically correct show, Love Boat which aired in 1977 and profited 6.2 millions dollars in today's money. As you can see the social advances over time allowed for one television show to make more money.
To conclude,   media greatly changes overtime. This is due to social and technological advances. People can access media easier and more costly. Also, film creators are more open to controversial shows and movies.
